As an outsider to this community, I interviewed many volunteers of New York Cares. From there I discovered that many of them were motivated to be a volunteer by compassion and desire to care about others.They do it only to be helpful to others living in New York who are in important need.
But in reality, one of my interview revealed that some people are volunteer for personal reason, to have a give back...
Interviewing volunteers, considering myself as an insider, I discovered that some just do it for personal purpose. In my last volunteer event, I met Mary, a young student from Pace University, majoring in psychology. Talking to her about my research of this subculture, she admitted that she was there because in order to graduate, she had to complete a total of twenty hours of volunteer work.
Here, is a type of contradiction. According to who they are speaking with, the approach, the confidence is different. I guess in order to give a better image of the organization to outsiders, it is better to answer something that is going to compliment the organization.
But fortunately, there still are people who are volunteer by purpose and by compassion in the same time.
I knew this experience would help me step out of my comfort to give service and help other people who needed it.Even though I am still really not sure about what I am going to do for the rest of my life but I know that help people, be useful and be one element that make people have a better life, are always been my criteria and I know this experience had helped me to be more involved to the community, helped me to know more about New York cares, volunteers and people receiving the aids. New York cares is a humanitarian organization caring people of our community.
It is all about love. This organization gives opportunities to anybody to be volunteer via its flexibility. Those volunteers are people like you and me with or without skills, with or without personal motivations,just bringing their help to build a better society.
